5 Days as a YouTuber: How an Introvert Manages a Channel

I’ve heard that as you get older, embarrassment fades away. Lately, I’ve found that to be surprisingly true. Being an introvert with a touch of perfectionism, I’ve spent much of my life mastering the art of procrastination. If something didn’t go well, I’d just drop it—no one else needed to know, just the sky and me. 😅

YouTube was no exception. Friends kept telling me to “just give it a try,” but I kept putting it off.

One day, someone suggested:

“Write down all the topics that only you could cover on a YouTube channel.”

So, I made a list. But as I wrote, the question hit me: “Would anyone actually like this?” That thought drained all my motivation, and true to my procrastinator instincts, I abandoned the list. 🙃

This Time Was Different. I Actually Started!

Determined to give YouTube a real shot, I created a new Google account dedicated to my channel. Setting up the channel was surprisingly easy, though I discovered something new along the way:

“Oh, there’s something called a brand account?”

As for monetization? That seemed light-years away, so I didn’t even bother looking it up. I figured, “If I ever qualify, YouTube will let me know, right?” 😆

Research Mode: Exploring the YouTube World

You know I’m a researcher by nature, right? So, like any good researcher, I started digging into what beginner YouTubers should do. There’s so much information out there! If you’re thinking of starting a channel, you’ll be surprised at how much you can learn by just following online tutorials.

Even after setting up my account, I didn’t rush to upload a video. Instead, I explored other channels to see what kind of content people were sharing. But here’s the thing—I rarely watch movies and never watch TV, so YouTube initially felt alien to me. Still, the more I watched, the more I began to understand how people used the platform.

Turns Out, YouTube Isn’t Easy

Eventually, I decided:

“Alright, let’s just upload something.”

I downloaded a free video editing app and planned to make a 10-minute video. Things didn’t go as planned. 😮‍💨

“Looks like I might quit again,” I thought.

But instead, I managed to create a simple 1-minute-and-30-second intro video. It wasn’t perfect, but I uploaded it anyway—a huge milestone for someone like me!

Uploading Mishaps and Unexpected Views

After the upload, I realized I had forgotten the classic YouTuber lines:

“Please like, subscribe, and turn on notifications!”

I tried editing the video but accidentally uploaded it again—this time with the app’s watermark still visible. 😂 I contemplated deleting both videos out of embarrassment but decided to leave them up since my only subscriber was my nephew.

Days later, I checked the stats and was shocked to see the view count increasing. It felt surreal!

Enter YouTube Shorts: The Turning Point

Not sure what to do next, I learned about YouTube Shorts and decided to give it a try. I quickly threw together some short clips, fully aware they were a mess. “Who’s going to see this anyway?” I thought and let them be. 🙃

But surprise! Within five days of uploading my first Short, I gained five subscribers and over 250 views. I even noticed a typo in my captions—“에티오피아” was misspelled as “애티오피아.” 😂 For those unfamiliar with Korean, the difference may seem small, but it’s as noticeable as spelling “coffee” as “cofie”—close, but not quite right!

The Channel Name: “Just Do It, Dr. Yun”

My channel is called “Just Do It, Dr. Yun” (or “일단 해보는, 윤박사” in Korean).

A friend joked:

“The name sounds like you’re performing at a highway rest stop!”

They suggested I change it to something more polished like “Dr. Ohsoon” or “Dr. Yoon.” But for now, I’m sticking with “Dr. Yun.” After all, I am Dr. Yun! 😊

Also, I have no plans to sing or dance on my channel—sorry to disappoint! With 365 days of coffee stories to tell, I’ve got more than enough content to keep me busy. ☕️

What’s Next? Content and Channel Focus

For now, my channel primarily caters to a Korean audience, as I’m still in the process of learning video editing tools. However, if you’re curious and want to take a peek, you’re more than welcome to visit!

I plan to share stories about Ethiopian coffee, global coffee cultures, café tours, and coffee knowledge in the future. While the videos will be in Korean for now, they’ll still give you a glimpse into the world of coffee through my eyes.

Link and Final Thoughts

This shy little channel of mine, “Just Do It, Dr. Yun”, can be found here:

Even though I have plenty of followers on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, I haven’t shared the channel there yet. I’m still a bit too shy for that. For now, I’ve only mentioned it on low-traffic platforms like this blog—perfect for an introvert like me. 😊

So, if you happen to stop by, please subscribe, like, and turn on notifications—even if I forget to ask for it in my videos. Oh, and don’t worry—I’m not a bad person! 😆
